Mario Cake Makers on the Food Network

mario turtle shellSome may remember the photos I took at my friends Brent & Annette's wedding cake. They are among my most popular photos with this one having 82 views yesterday, 528 views this week, and 156,585 views in total. 564 people call it a favorite! The cake has appeared in several magazines and online stories and now the makers of the cake, Gateaux, Inc. will be appearing on the Food Network Challenge this Sunday at 7pm. They are competing with 4 other cake makers to make the best Dr. Seuss themed cake. Nerds, set your TiVos!

Hyena Men

These photos of Hyenas and their handlers/owners in NIgeria are amazing. They are part of an exhibition of the work of Pieter Hugo at Yossi Milo Gallery. Check out all these links for more.

Part of me is disturbed by this* and part of me thinks it is just about the coolest thing I have seen**.

* Should we really be able to so easily change the data of a photo?
** Hell. yes!

More Mario cake related news

mario turtle shell It is surprising how much interest there is in this cake. Several photos are nearing or have surpassed the 25k view mark and there are 127 people who call one a favorite. I have seen this on Digg, Reddit, joystiq, and TotalFark.com, among many others. It really makes me wish I had done something more than snap some photos of this great cake. In case you didn't see it, this was made by Robin of Gateaux Inc. Hit her up for your next wedding cake.

I have posted 5 more photos that I took with a macro lens on Jesse's D70s (check his photos out for more wedding fun, including Mouser with a moustache and me on the verge of being milked). Enjoy.

Super (Mario) Wedding Cake

Super (Mario) Cake At perhaps the best wedding (congratulations Brent and Annette) I have been to, there was by far the best wedding cake I have seen. Other people tend to agree as the photos have been linked to from Boing Boing and Wonderland to name just two. That explains how some of the photos have nearly 7000 views and over 50 people calling one a favorite.

UPDATE: The creator of this cake, Robin, from Gateaux Inc which is located in Plymouth, MN. "was amazing to work with and of course is amazingly talented" according the the bride and I can't say that I could disagree. Just look at some of her other work.

The cake toppers were very hard to find. The bride looked for months and months and finally found a set on eBay.com; they were from Japan's "Nintendo Club"

Here is the whole set (with more to come as I get some closeup macro shots I took, uploaded.)

Weekend recap: Southshore of Superior

Stump and pine cone I returned yesterday from a long weekend along Lake Superior's south shore at Big Bay State Park on Madeline Island (one of the Apostle Islands) in Wisconsin. There were six of us plus four dogs so there was lots to keep us busy. We had fun, made some (camp) gourmet meals and got a bit too rowdy on Saturday night - I paid for that all day Sunday. Here are some photos of the trip.

Bente de Mayo Party Recap

9.4 seconds of fire This past Saturday I was fortunate enough to have many of my friends and neighbors over for a belated Cinco de Mayo party that also happened to coincide with my birthday. We had some piņatas, authentic tacos al Pastor, volleyball, a bonfire, and even some fire juggling (as you can see from the photo). It was a great time and a good way to celebrate another year gone. Hopefully, this will be an annual occurrence if people are up for it. Here are some more photos of the event.

minnēbar comes to a close

minnēbar was great. It was interesting, active, creative, technical, loud, hot, and fun. It is over for now. So far the feedback both in person and on the wiki has been overwhelmingly positive. There were some issues with the wifi staying up and we were pretty much at capacity with over 110 people attending. I plan to write a recap soon, but for now you can browse some of the Flickr photos tagged with minnebar (there have been so many that minnebar is a hot tag right now). And here are some links to the people posting them:

Amazing photos of a nearly tame, completely cute fox

Fuzzy Freddy
Originally uploaded by Rob Lee.
I wish I could take credit for such a great photo but alas no, this is not my almost-pet fox. Rob Lee from Evergreen, CO holds that honor and he has a whole slew of great shots of this creature. Over the course of a year this fox has become decreasingly timid of Rob and had even come inside the house when the door was left open. The comments on many of these photos warn of feeding wild animals (which Rob does not do) which apparently someone has been doing.

Photo sandwich w/tech conferences as bread

flightJust finished up a two day conference in San Diego on Strategic E-HR - yeah that's what I said. It was better than it sounded. Really. I am going to stick around for next week's Emerging Technologies conference from O'Reilly and so I have some time to kill in between. What better way to spend some time than taking photos around town. Check them out at Flickr.

Magazines to which I should probably subscribe

For one reason or another, I have never been much of a consumer of magazines. In many respects I am grateful for this. Time is always an issue and I can rarely get through a full magazine before the next one comes. But I also do not like the waste magazines generate. It is very visible and apparent to me as I retain stacks of magazines and then have to recycle them. That being said, there are a few magazines to which I really ought to be subscribing:

The New Yorker - I am always impressed with the content of this magazine and the esteem that it has throughout my network of friends and beyond. It hits right on most of the issues it tackles, and does so much better than the daily newspapers.

Paste - I love to find new music and film and Paste makes it easy. Not only can I read about a ton of great artists and projects that are just coming out, but I can also see and listen to them thanks the CD or DVD included with every issue. They are right on with my tastes too.

Aperture - The few times I have seen this magazine I was very impressed and since I would like to be a better photographer it would help me out.

National Geographic Traveler - Travel magazines are hard for me. I really feel like I need a good one and this one seems very good (though I am tempted to want the traditional National Geographic instead).

Make - I am curious and love to build stuff (or rip stuff apart. Is there another magazine that is better suited to those types of activities?

Wired - The only magazine on this list that I actually do get. I like it, I really do, but more and more often, I get this type of news via the osmosis known as being online.

These were all listed in the order I would like them. If anyone knows how I can get any of the following delivered free for a year let me know. Anything else missing?

A couple that didn't make the list but were very close were:Dwell, Real Simple mostly just because I don't think I would have time.

New Nikon & Nikon News

I recently purchased a Nikon D50 digital SLR camera but haven't even had the time to go out and really use it. I have posted a couple dozen photos taken with the camera. All of them are pretty much on the auto settings and none are very good, but I think they show some of the potential of this camera.

I considered getting the D70s and drooled over the D200 but in the end I realized that the D50 (nearly identical to the D70s - and in many ways better*) is still too much camera for the like of me and I still have much to learn before an upgrade is warranted.

This post about my new Nikon camera comes amid speculation that Nikon may discontinue its analog camera production. There is still some confusion over Nikon's plans with seperate reports coming out in favor of and denying the rumors. But Nikon's site seems pretty clear about the issue:

As a result of the new strategy Nikon will discontinue production of all lenses for large format cameras and enlarging lenses with sales of these products ceasing as soon as they run out of stock. This also applies to most of our film camera bodies, interchangeable manual focus lenses and related accessories. Although Nikon anticipates that the products will still be in retail distribution up to Summer 2006.

* the things I like about the D50 over the D70 are: the size and weight of it. Is a tiny bit smaller and I think it feels better, it uses Secure Digital cards rather than compact flash this saves me money and is faster, there are a couple other things, but I will save them for a more complete review in a couple weeks.

Feeling Minnesota

Here's a few bits of news and links I have been collecting the past few weeks, relating to my home state of Minnesota. Don't ever say I don't represent!

Sex, Drugs, Rock and Roll

Strike A Pose

While I was searching Corbis yesterday for the dreaded stock photo of people at a conference room table (just for the comp I pray - hoping to get a photo shoot done) I noticed a feature called CorbisOutlineTM on the portraiture section of their site. They have a ton of photos of celebrities in various poses and stages of undress, some grouped by new movies that are coming out. There are some good photos there and I would suggest checking them out. The photo browser is unfortunately in Flash as so I cannot link directly to my favorites. The two photos below just really make me smile (I don't think it is a coincidence that they were both in one of my all-time favorite movies: Rushmore). If you happen to be looking ofr this sort of photo for your commercial work I would suggest giving these a look. All rights to these images are reserved by Corbis and the photographers listed below.

God is he a funny man - I think that is a copy of Meatballs on the floor.

Is it a coincidence that each of them struck a somewhat similar pose? Maybe really funny people recognize a funny pose when they make it?

On a loosely related note (Tom Cruise is pictured on Corbis' Portraiture section home): Tom Cruise is an ass. There is just something wrong with this quote:

"I think every little girl dreams about her wedding. I used to think I was going to marry Tom Cruise."
Especially when you think she was just 8 years old when she saw Top Gun for the first time. Plus she is at least 2 inches taler than him! [Source: IMDB]

Works of Fire

kaboom!Last night I tried my hand at some fireworks photography with my Sony DSC-S85 digital camera, a tripod, and a good sense of humor. I went down to the Mississippi in Saint Paul for the Taste of Minnesota. As with many digital cameras there is a delay between the time the shutter release button is depressed and when the camera actually takes the photo. This being the case, many of the photos in this new fireworks gallery are not of exactly what was intended. I liked how some turned out, however and then to salvage the night - I took a few shots of a ferris wheel.

UPDATE: I know there is something weird happening in IE where the photo is not showing in this post. It is currently blowing my mind.

Feats of strength and beauty

What beautiful photography I stumbled across on such a great site: Marc Escobosa. I hope to someday, take one photo that is as good as these (and to travel to these places).

--- --- ---

Barry Bonds is on a pace to hit 324 homeruns this season. This would be quite a feat considering the previous high (set by him last year) was 73 home runs in a season.

Photos of waves

Although I did not take these pictures these are some very cool photos of some large waves crashing against a ship canal on Lake Superior in Duluth, MN. Needless to say, Lake Superior rarely gets waves quite this large. Although it is by no means a calm lake, these ocean-sized waves are hardly common and have actually collapsed walls and other structures over the last several weeks.
