The worst part about this new "epic" from Steven Spielberg is that it isn't. War of the Worlds has all the makings of a film that can really show us something. Show us something, not about alien warlords coming to exterminate human kind, but rather about ourselves. And it begins to; the most poignant scene comes when Cruise and his kids are driving the only functioning vehicle toward a ferryboat. Throngs of people wanting a ride, some help, or the van for themselves accost them. In this ugly scene, we see glimpses of both the dark nature of people in dark times and glimpses of how this movie could becomes powerful, insightful and great. Unfortunately War of the Worlds becomes none of these things - rather it becomes muddled, slow, clichéd, impersonal, and unbelievable (in a bad way). By the end, the audience should be exhausted with worry about the fate of the world, instead, due singularly to the fact that we really only follow the fates of three somewhat dull characters, we neither know that much or care that much.
