The Last Unicorn

The Last Unicorn is a film I saw back in the early 80's when I was really young - but not too young that I didn't know that is was a good film. It was exciting, sad, scary, and heart-warming - all the things you might want in a children's movie. Watching it now as an adult I saw the film much the same way but realized that there is even more there than I first thought.

It was exciting, sad, scary, and heart-warming - all the things you might want in a children's movie. Watching it now as an adult, I saw the film much the same way, but realized that there is even more there than I first thought. There are references to Shakespeare, social commentary, cultural iconography and more. There is some great voice work, but the animation hasn't aged well.

The film was created by Arthur Rankin Jr. who also did the early Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit animated films to mixed reviews. There was extensive use of Japanese animators and you can see those influences in the final product.

I was surprised to see that there is going to be a remake of this film with some of the original voice actors (Mia Farrow and Christopher Lee), but looks to be live action set in the new fantasy film capitol, New Zealand. I will be excited to see it and see what changes the creators decide to make.
