Brick

While the concept of Brick was interesting and the mystery aspects, not entirely simplistic, the dialog derails the film from the very beginning. Either my previous statement is true or I just missed the boat on what the characters were saying and how they were interacting.

It is entirely possible that what I interpreted as a young writer/director trying too hard to make his first film into something more than it is, was actually a brilliant representation on how teen interact these days. I felt like I needed to consult the Urban Dictionary a couple too many times. More disconcerting than that though was the idea that the writer had to as well.

It wasn’t until the middle of the movie where a great scene involving one main character’s mom broke through the non-intended nonsense with some really funny interactions. Rather than a turning point, however, where I was hoping this film noir would transform to more of a dark comedy, went back to taking itself too seriously. It was just too bad I couldn’t.
